Feeding A.G. Bell

When kids don’t get enough to eat, they can’t concentrate and they can’t learn. Teachers tell stories of kids excited to be at school on Mondays because they can eat there through federal programs. But these same children, in our very own district - the Lake Washington School District (LWSD) - often go hungry on weekends, or during school breaks.

Hopelink’s Pantry Packs program provides weekend packs of food for more than 600 LWSD students who are identified as being “food insecure.” With community donations of kid-friendly food and funds, 40-50 volunteers come together each month to “pack the packs” at Hopelink’s Kirkland warehouse. Volunteer drivers then deliver the packs to schools where the packs get into the hands of hungry children.

Throughout the school year, Pantry Packs demonstrates how volunteers, schools and the community work together to help children in our area. You and your family can help our AG Bell Community through Pantry Packs in the following ways:

1) Donate Kid-Friendly Non-Perishable food at all School events (Harvest Party, School Dance, etc) or any time! A designated bin is ALWAYS available for donations in the school lobby.

2) Volunteer to deliver packs through the Sign Up Genius Link here. Packs are delivered every Thursday after school. This is a great opportunity for you and your child to give back to our Bell Community. Delivery takes about 30 minutes.  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0d4aafaa2fa5fd0-pantry

If you are interested in volunteering with Pantry Packs please email pantrypacks@agbellptsa.org

Thank you for giving every child at Bell a chance to learn and grow!

3) Watch and share the video! To further sustain and grow the program, Pantry Packs and Feed Washington have collaborated on a viral video campaign to motivate district families to donate $5 each month in a recurring donation to supply more packs. More than 30 LWSD students – including one from A.G. Bell Elementary -- came together to film this compelling video at Eastlake, Redmond, Juanita and Lake Washington high schools and Franklin Elementary. Please watch, donate and share this video via social media from Oct. 2 – 12 and use the hashtags #solvestudenthunger, #lwsd, and #feedwa.

More information and the video can be found at www.feedwashington.org/lwsd. Please email PantryPacks@hope-link.org with questions.

ABOUT PANTRY PACKS:

Pantry Packs began when an educator at Evergreen Middle School in Redmond found that children were arriving to school hungry after  weekends and holidays.  The goal of this non-profit is keeping hungry kids fed. There are kids in our own community without enough food at home to keep their tummies full over the weekend.  Pantry Packs provides a rolling backpack program. Every Friday, packs are filled with kid friendly food for the weekend.  Kids, identified by school counselors, take the packs home Friday.

Pantry Packs serves about 35 children at AG Bell on a weekly basis.
